PORTRAITS OF FREEDOM
(formerly "Arts and Civil Rights")
Pops Peterson’s multimedia lecture, “Portraits of Freedom” is an emotional cavalcade of photos, video, music, and stories of the artists and artworks that have fostered civil rights in American history. First presented in the 2016 Conference, Peterson’s powerful debut received a standing ovation, as have his sold-out lectures at The Norman Rockwell Museum and other venues. In the presentation, attendees discovered why he received an award from the 9th Annual Conference for his “commitment to the advancement of Civil Rights,” as well as being named Artist in Residence of the MCAD. Discussing influential artists from Harriet Beecher Stowe to Stevie Wonder, as well as first-person anecdotes of his encounters with Josephine Baker, Gordon Parks and other icons, Peterson delves into the essence of art as a force for social change. Reinventing Rockwell
In his talk, “Reinventing Rockwell,” Pops Peterson details how his award-winning series, "Reinventing Rockwell," is updating the art of Norman Rockwell to reflect the realities and diversity of today’s American scene. Peterson, who describes the talk as a “true story of ghosts and miracles, presented with dozens of illustrations,” will also discuss his own artistic journey—from graphic designer and writer to the world of fine art, with powerful images to speak to power and uplift our society.

"Breaking Barriers" at the Massachusetts State House
Pops Peterson speaks at the Massachusetts State House in the opening ceremony of the "Breaking Barriers" exhibition curated by the Massachusetts Office on Disability, David D'Arcangelo, director. Pops' painting, "Freedom From Shame," was the inspiration for the statewide art competition that culminated in this prestigeous exhibition.
